Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting

Learn the skills to create the art you desire through fun exercises and exciting projects. A variety of media, including charcoal, pencil, pastels, and paint of choice will be explored. Classes progress from exploring media to individual artistic techniques, depending on the need of the student. A list of materials will be provided at the first class.

Beginning/Intermediate Acrylic Painting

Paint lovely landscapes and St. Augustine scenes while learning the principles and techniques of acrylic painting. You will complete 2-4 paintings during the class.

Photography is an intriguing mixture of art, science, technology and history. In this course you will touch on many aspects of the evolution of the practice and the art of photography, as well as learning techniques to improve your photographs. This course is an intermediate photography course but open to all levels of interest.

Ken Barrett is a St. Augustine native whose interest, skills and talent in photography dovetail perfectly with the history, community, nature and art of the area. He is a professional photographer and former teacher at Flagler College who exhibits at local and regional galleries.

Origami- Paper Magic

 Origami is the art of transforming a flat, square piece of paper into a finished sculpture suitable for giving as a unique personalized gift or for decorations. During this class, we will make several modular pieces as well as single sheet sculptures (including stars, whimsical figures, toys, etc.), learn the basic folds, bases, and how to read and understand origami diagrams. We will also briefly discuss the history of origami and its present day scientific use in medicine and the aerospace industry.

Jo Sage is an experienced teacher of the ancient art of paper folding. She has taught all ages in schools and community settings. A list of materials will be supplied.

Denise Baudinet is a French native speaker who has been teaching French to English speakers for more than 25 years. She has been a translator and technical writer since the early ’90s. She taught beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels French to college and university students since 2001, as well as to high school, language academy, and IB [International Baccalaureate] students. To quote the Bard: “The play’s the thing….” Shakespeare’s plays were written to be performed and read aloud. Experience and learn Shakespeare’s comedies as he intended, by sharing in dramatic group readings of some of his most famous works. Join this class and be prepared to enjoy reading and listening to the Bard’s comedies. No previous knowledge of Shakespeare is necessary- all levels are welcome.

Jennifer Latka has been a teacher at St. Augustine High School for 13 years, teaching Drama, Reading, English, Creative Writing, Humanities, Special Education and Art over the years.   She also teaches drama at Charter School USA. Ms. Latka has a Masters Degree in Arts Education and is an award winning playwright. She acts with the Limelight Theatre, Atlantic Beach Experimental Theatre and the Flagler Playhouse. Ms. Latka is also a director and co-founder of “The Alumni Project” a local theatre production group.

Banjo for Beginners

Get started on one of the world’s most recognizable  and fun instruments. The banjo is a great instrument for personal or group music. It can be played in a variety of styles- strumming, frailing or picking. This class will touch on both bluegrass picking patterns and old-time clawhammer method.

Jim Bascom plays both clawhammer and picking style banjo. He plays regularly with the Free Rangers at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and in local bands, where he usually performs with his wife, Angie, on bass.

Bluegrass String Band

 

Break out the fiddles, banjos, mandos, guitars, dobros, basses, dulcimers, autoharps, whatever…or just come play and sing some of the favorite bluegrass and old-time songs with folks like you, who love making music together. Basic chords and rhythm is required but we will work up to speed and develop our repertoire as we move through the class.

Tommy Bledsoe is a native of the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia who plays many string instruments and knows a ton of songs. He is a Florida Banjo Champion and a Tennessee Hog Caller (retired).
